[My vacation in Amsterdam has been quite something! It has felt just like a summer holiday when the sunny and warm weather lasted the whole last week. On Thursday it was almost 30 degrees so I ended up buying ice-cream twice. Despite the hot weather, the four of us (the children and the au pairs) had energy to go to Amstelpark to have fun at its labyrinth that we enjoyed already when I was living here. The weather cooled down towards the night and I took a bike to dance. My local friend was going to a place called Club 8 so I joined the party and on my way there I was admiring the beautiful river Schinkel.]
Perjantaina oli hieman mukavampi keli, kun kuumasta auringosta huolimatta oli muutama aste vähemmän. Käytin tilaisuutta hyväkseni ja pyöräilin lempipaikkaani koko Amsterdamissa: puiselle penkille Amstelparkin sivupolulla. Kyllä kelpasi rentoutua ja lueskella vähän ranskaa oppikirjoista, jotka olen saanut perheen äidiltä lainaan. Illalla pääsimme vihdoin maistamaan kakkua, jonka olimme 9-vuotiaan kanssa leiponeet edellisenä iltana yllätykseksi syntymäpäiviään viettävälle perheen isälle. Mato, jolla oli karkkiraidat ja suklaavaahto-vadelma-sisus vei kielen mennessään!
[On Friday it was a little bit better weather since it was a few degrees less even though the sun was still hot. I used the opportunity to go to my very favourite place in the whole Amsterdam: the wooden bench along a sidepath in Amstelpark. It was simply great to relax and read some French study books that I had borrowed from my au pair mother. In the evening we finally got to taste the cake I had baked together with the 9-year-old on the night before. The worm with candy stripes and chocolate mousse and raspberries inside was awesome!]
Lauantaiksi minulla ei ollut oikein suunnitelmia, joten oli totinen positiivinen yllätys, kun minua kysyttiin mukaan perheen purjeveneelle. Se oli toinen kerta elämässäni purjeveneessä (sikäli kun muistan) ja oli se ihanaa! Mutta täytyy todeta, että vaatii totisesti taitoa, jotta tietää, mitä köysiä pitää milloinkin kiristellä tai löysätä. Onneksi sain itse olla vain kyytiläisenä. Lounaanikin oli minulle harvinaisuus, sillä kokonaista kalaa (ainakaan meribassia) ei tule usein syötyä.
[I had no plans for Saturday so it was a very positive surprise when I was asked to join the family for their sailboat. It was my second time on a sailboat ever (if I remember correctly) and it was amazing! But I have to say that it surely needs some skills to know which robes to tighten or losen and when. Luckily I got to be only a passenger. Also my lunch was a rarity for me because I don't eat a complete fish (or at least sea bass) that often.]
Viime pyhänä liityin perheen äidin ja nuoremman pojan kanssa lasten capoeira-tapahtumaan. Vaikka tapahtuman tempo oli hidas ja me aikuiset emme päässeet lajia kokeilemaan, niin oli hauska seurata kuinka yhteisö tuntui tiiviiltä ja oli kuin he olisivat juhlineet heti aamupäivästä laulamalla, soittamalla ja tanssimalla. Pääsin myöhemmin tanssimaan itsekin, kun poikkesin illasta De Krooniin, missä en au pair -vuoteni jälkeen olekaan käynyt.
[Last Sunday I joined the mom and the younger boy to a capoeira event meant for kids. Even though the tempo of the whole thing was slow and we adults didn't have a chance to try it out, it was fun to follow how the capoeira community was close to each other and it was like they would have had a party right in the morning when they played, sang and danced. Later I had a possiblity to dance myself when I stopped by at De Kroon where I had not been after my au pair year.]
Tällä viikolla olemme tehneet aasialaisia ruokia kotona päivälliseksi. Vanhempi pojista pitää kovasti sushista ja puheeksi tulivat myös vietnamilaiset kevätrullat, joten päädyimme tekemään molempia, sillä minulla on niiden teosta kokemusta jo aiemmin. 9-vuotias tuli molempina päivinä varmistamaan pariinkin otteeseen, että hänet varmasti haetaan paikalle, kun kaikki on valmista rullaamista varten. Jokainen sai itse tehdä sopivia omaan makuunsa. Eilen koin yllättävän kohtaamisen, kun kävin hakemassa 7-vuotiasta kaverilta leikkimästä. Poikien siivotessa leikkejään juttelin kaverin isoäidin kanssa, joka asuu Belgiassa. Kun hän sai kuulla minun käyneen Maastrichtissa ja pitäneen siitä, antoi hän minulle käyntikortin kahvilaan, jota pitää siellä, ja kehoitti poikkeamaan ensi kerralla Maastrichtin matkalla siellä. Ehdin viimeisinä päivinäni täällä tapaamaan myös toisen au pair -aikaisen ystäväni lounaan merkeissä. Viime kerrasta oli jo lähes neljä vuotta.
[This week we have cooked Asian dishes for dinner at home. The older of the boys loves sushi and we ended up talking about the Vietnamese spring rolls too, so we made both since I had experience of making those. The 9-year-old came twice on both of the days to make sure I will let him know when everything is ready for rolling. Everyone got to make exactly the kind of dish they wanted to. Yesterday afternoon I had a surprising meeting when I picked up the 7-year-old from his friend. While the boys cleaned up their plays I talked with the friend's grandmother who lives in Belgium. When she heard I have visited Maastricht and that I liked it a lot, she gave me a business card of a cafe she has in there. She told me to come there next time I go to Maastricht again. During my last days in Amsterdam I still managed to meet another friend of mine I got to know when I lived here. Having a lunch with her was great since it had been almost four years since we last met.]
Nyt olen junassa suuntaamassa takaisin Pariisiin. Ikävä tulee Amsterdamin rauhaa, au pair -perhettä, kavereitani täällä, keskustan nättejä vinoja taloja sekä monia muita hyviä puolia. Mutta oli aivan mahtavaa viettää toinen kevätlomani kyseisessä paikassa ja toivon taas pian saavani mahdollisuuden poiketa aurinkoiseen (tai miksei pilviseenkin) Amsterdamiin!
[Now I am in a train heading back to Paris. I will miss the peace of Amsterdam, my au pair family, my friends, the beautiful inclined buildings of the centre and many other good things. But it was awesome to spend my second spring vacation in this particular place and I hope soon to have a chance to visit the sunny (or why not the cloudy) Amsterdam!]
