Reissu Saksaan / Trip to Germany

Viime perjantaina oli aikainen herätys aamukolmen jälkeen. Minun piti ehtiä Charles-de-Gaullen lentokentälle 7:45 lentoani varten ja halusin ottaa hieman extra-aikaa, koska en ole tottunut yöbusseihin ja koska paikallisiin junalinjoihin ei ole ikinä liikaa luottamista. Kaikki sujui onnekseni hyvin Frankfrutiin saakka, mutta siellä jouduin suunnittelemaan uudelleen toisten suomalaisten tapaamisen. Olin ajatellut, että voimme kätevästi tavata matkalaukku-hihnan luona, koska kaikki päätyisimme sinne, mutta ilmenikin, että Frankfurtin kentällä on aika monta liukuhihnapaikkaa ja tottakai he saapuivat aivan vastakkaiselle puolelle koko lentoasemaan kuin minä. Löysin tieni kuitenkin toiseen terminaaliin asti ja ennen kymmentä tapasin tuttuja ihmisiä omasta kotikirkostani. Jatkoimme sieltä yhdessä vuokra-autolla matkaa pieneen Steedenin kylään (2000 asukasta) ja ihailimme saksalaisia maisemia. Saksan maaseutu ja pienet kylät ovat mielestäni erittäin söpöjä suomalaisiin verrattuna, sillä asutus on keskittyneenä pieniin talorykelmiin (ja sikäli kun kyseessä on muutamaa rakennusta isompi yhteistö, on kylän keskellä aina myös kirkko), eikä peltojen keskellä hajanaisina asuntoina.

[Last Friday I had an early wake-up alarm after 3 am. I needed to go to the Charles-de-Gaulle airport for my flight at 7:45 and I wanted to have some extra time because I am not used to the night busses and because one should never trust the local train lines too much. To my luck, everything went well until Frankfurt but there I had to re-plan meeting the other Finns. I had thought that we can easily meet at the conveyor belt for the luggage because everyone would end up there anyway, but I found out that there were quite many of those at the Frankfurt airport and of course they arrived to the opposite side of the whole airport than me. Nevertheless, I found my way all the way to the other terminal and met familiar people from my home church before ten o'clock. Then we rented a car and continued together to the small village of Steeden (2000 inhabitants) while admiring the landscapes of Germany. The German countryside and small villages are very cute compared to the Finnish ones because the colonization is focused to the groups of houses (and if there were more than a few buildings together, there often was also a church in the middle of the village), and not divided between the fields as in Finland.]

Steedenissä meitä odotti tuttuja kasvoja viime vuodesta ja meidät otettiin heti hyvin lämpimästili loistavaa ja sitä oli paljon koko viikonlopun teologisen konferenssin ajan. Enkä puhu vain pääsruoista, vaan myös jälkiruoista ja jokapäiväisistä kakkuhetkistä. Vieraanvaraisuus oli käsinkosketeltavaa!

[In Steeden we were greeted by many familiar faces from the last year and we were so warmly welcomed there. The long presentations of the theme "law and gospel" were sometimes a bit tiring for a layperson like me but the contents were influential. The food was amazing and we had it more than enough during the weekend of the theological conference. And I am not talking only about the main dishes but also the desserts and everyday cake breaks. The hospitality was tangible!]

Kakkuhetkillä minua aina kehoitettiin maistamaan kaikkea ja hakemaan parasta toinenkin pala. Sunnuntain kakkupöydän ääressä oli pakko luovuttaa.
[At the cake times I was always told to taste everything and take another piece of the best one. With Sunday's cake table I had to give up.]

Lauantaina iltapäivällä päätin lähteä itsekseni nauttimaan Steedenin rauhallisesta ympäristöstä ja kerätä annoksen luonnonhelmassa oleskelua jaksaakseni jälleen Pariisissa. Seurattuani jokea vähän matkaa huomasin ylhäällä mäen päällä pienen linnan.

[Saturday afternoon I decided to go for a walk by myself to enjoy the peaceful surroundings in Steeden and to collect an amount of staying in the nature to survive back in Paris. After I had followed the river for a while I noticed a small castle on top of the hill.]

Krusifikseja ja ristejä näkyi välillä katujen varsilla. Suomesta tuskin löytyisi mistään moista.
[I could find crucifixes and crosses along the streets. I doubt if that was to be found anywhere in Finland.] 

Seutu oli niin rauhallista ja mieltä virkistävää.
[The area was so peaceful and mind-refreshing.]

Steedenissä ollessamme osa suomalaisista yöpyi pienessä hotellissa / majatalossa, jota pitää hieman iäkkäämpi pariskunta. Siellä jos missä pääsi eroon kaupunkien hälinästä, sillä paikka oli pienen tien päässä, joka mutkitteli peltojen ja puuston läpi niin, ettei sinne ajaessa uskoisi sieltä mitään hotellia löytyvänkään.

[While staying in Steeden, some of the Finns were sleeping at a small hotel / inn that was run by an older couple. If somewhere, then there one could escape the noisy of the towns because it was at the end of a small road that was zigzagging through the fields and forests. When driving there, you can hardly believe to find a hotel there.]

Lauantaina illalla lähdimme 3 auton voimin porukalla Steedenistä lähimpään isompaan kaupunkiin, Limburgiin, missä saksalaiset ystävämme kierrättivät meitä vanhan kaupungin kaduilla. Vanhat saksalaiset talot ovat kyllä kauniita katsella.

[Saturday evening we drove by 3 cars to the closest bigger town, Limburg where our German friends showed us around on the streets of its old town. The old German houses just are beautiful to watch.]

Sunnuntaina konferenssin päätyttyä ja sanottuamme heipat saksalaisille isännillemme lähdimme suomalais-porukalla ajelemaan Eisenachiin. Päästyämme noin kolmen tunnin ajomatkan jälkeen kaupunkiin, saimme lopuksi mutkitella melkoista tietä rinnettä ylös. Siellä kirjauduimme sisään hulppean näköiseen hotelliin, joka on yli sata vuotta vanhan talon tiloissa. Vanhanaikainen sisustus oli todellakin mieleeni! Jopa ravintolan rakenne ja yksityiskohdat olivat hyvin tunnelmallisia ja siellä meitä odotti pari yllätystäkin. Ensinnäkin, meidän seurueellemme oli varattu siellä pöytä, vaikkemme olleet etukäteen sanoneet tahtovamme syödä päivällistä siellä. Toisekseen, eräs tarjoilijoista osasi muutamia sanoja suomeksi, kuten "yksi, kaksi, kolme" ja "kiitos". Ja ruoka oli makoisaa!

[After the conference ended on Sunday and we had said bye to our German hosts, we Finns drove to Eisenach. After 3 hours of sitting in the car we reached Eisenach and then we had to drive a very zigzagging road up on a hill. There we registered to a fancy looking hotel that was in a building over 100 years old. The old fashioned style really pleased me! Even the style of the restaurant were very atmospheric and there we faced a couple of surprises. Firstly, there was a reservation to our group even though we had not told them before that we would like to have a dinner there. And secondly, one of the waiters knew some words in Finnish, such as "yksi, kaksi, kolme" (one, two three) and "kiitos" (thank you). And the food was delicious!]

Hyvin nukutun yön ja maukkaan aamupalan jälkeen hurautimme autolla Wartburgin linnalle, jonka olimme jo nähneet hotellihuoneidemme ikkunoista. Kyseinen linna oli aikanaan merkittävä paikka sekä pyhälle Elisabethille, joka asui siellä 1200-luvulla, että Martin Lutherille, joka käänsi Uuden Testamentin saksaksi ollessaan siellä piilossa jouduttuaan lainsuojattomaksi 1500-luvulla. Meidän seuraamme linnaa ihailemaan liittyivät Steedenissä olleet latvialaiset uskonveljemme sekä heidän saksalainen kuskinsa. Oli hienoa päästä näkemään linnaa myös sisältäkäsin aina siihen huoneeseen saakka, jossa Luther aikanaan oleskeli.

[After a well-slept night and good breakfast we went to the Wartburg castle that we had already seen from out hotel room windows. It was a remarkable place for both saint Elisabeth who lived there in the 13th century, and Martin Luther who translated the New Testament into German while hiding there after being outlawed in the 16th century. We were accompanied to admire the castle by our Latvian brothers in faith from Steeden and their German driver. It was wonderful to get to see the castle also from inside where we could enter the room that Luther had used.]

Elisabethin neitsytkammion kattoa koristi 1900-luvun alun upea mosaiikki.

Linnan vanhin seinämaalaus löytyi kappelista, joka rakennettiin noin vuonna 1320.
