Leipomiskaveri / A friend to bake with

Ihanaa kun voin täälläkin toteuttaa itseäni leipomalla! Uuni ei ole ihan saman kokoinen kuin mihin olen Suomessa tottunut ja ainekset ja välineistö ovat omalta osaltaan myös hieman erilaisia. Kuitenkin verrattuna esimerkiksi Japaniin voin olla tyytyväinen täällä leipomisen suhteen. Paras puoli täällä on se, että asun toisen leipomisintoisen kanssa. Koska vuokraemäntäni leipoo tämän tästä pannukakkuja ja piirakoita, niin välineistöä löytyy jo keittiöstä ja voimme vaihdella reseptejä. Viime keskiviikkona meidän kummankin ollessa kotona päätimmekin yhdessä kokeilla tehdä kanelikierteitä tuorejuusto-päällysteellä. Suomalaisiin korvapuusteihin tottuneena epäilin aluksi, miten päällyste niihin sopisi, mutta oli totisesti kokeilemisen arvoinen, sillä se oli huikeaa! Pientä hienosäätöä taikinan ynnä muun kanssa vielä voisi tehdä, mutta tämä olikin "harjoituskierros".

[It is so wonderful I can express myself by baking here too! The oven is not quite the same size as the ones I am used to use in Finland and the ingredients and equipment are a little bit different as well. But compared to for example to my situation in Japan I can be nothing but happy about the possibilities to bake here. The best part here is that I am living with another person who loves baking. Because my landlady is every now and then making pancakes and pies, the kitchen is pretty well equipped and we can change recipes. Last Wednesday when we both were at home, we decided to try out cinnamon rolls with cream cheese topping. Since I am used to the Finnish cinnamon rolls (korvapuusti) I was suspicious how the topping would fit the rolls but it surely was worth of trying because it was great! We could do finetuning with the dough and other but this was "a practice" anyway.]

Eilen illalla menin ulos katsomaan vaskipuhallin-bändiä, jossa H soittaa. Oli melko hauskaa kuunnella kappaleita, jotka soitettiin vain rummuilla, trumpeteilla, pasuunoilla, tuubilla ja yhdellä isommalla vaskipuhaltimella (jonka nimeä en tiedä)! Matkalla takaisin kotiin ylitin Seinen ja näin sen tulvan. Vesi ei nouse pääteille tai taloihin asti (ainakaan keskustan alueella), mutta laivoille johtavat tiet ovat täysin veden peitossa, joten risteilyille ei ole vähään aikaan menemistä.

[Last night I went out to see a gig of an brass instrument band that H is playing with. It was rather funny to listen to songs played with only drums, trumpets, trombones, tubas and one bigger brass instrument (I don't know its name)! On my way back home I crossed Seine and saw the flood there. The water is not rising up to the main roads or houses (at least in the center area) but the pathways to the boat are fully covered so there is no going for cruises for a while.]

Töiden suhteen minulla on tällä hetkellä hieman parempi olo. Päivän kulku menee jo aika lailla rutiinilla ja tiedän hieman, millaisia kukakin esikoulumme lapsista on pienten luokkaa myöten. On helpompi arvoida, kenen ruoka pitää lämmittää ensin (kyllä, lämmitämme mikrossa muutaman eväsrasian kerrallaan, jotta lapset saavat lämpimän lounaan) tai ketä pitää auttaa ja muistuttaa missäkin asiassa. Olen myös jutellut johtajan kanssa muutamaan otteeseen ja ymmärrämme toisiamme yhä paremmin. Eilen työsopimukseeni tehtiin pari muutosta ja helmikuun alusta muutama päiväni viikossa tulee olemaan hieman lyhyempi. Mukava, kun ei tarvitse joka päivä olla enää kellon ympäri liikkeellä, vaikka se tarkoittaakin, että rauhallinen palapeli- ja muovailuvaha-aika jää jonkun muun aikuisen kontolle. Lapset ovat jo oppineet, että minä muovailen mielelläni erilaisia eläimiä heille.

[I feel a bit better about my work at the moment. The day activities are becoming routines for me and I start knowing what all the children are like, also in the smaller ones' classroom. It is easier to figure out whose food I should warm up first (yes, we warm up a few lunchboxes at a time in the microwave ovens so that the kids would have a warm lunch) or who needs which kind of help or reminding in which situation. I also have talked several times with the headmaster and we understand each other better and better. Yesterday we made a couple of changes to my working contract and from the beginning of February some weekdays will be a bit shorter for me. It is nice that I don't need to spend 12 hours each day for my work even though it means that the more peaceful time for puzzles and play dough is left for some other adult. The children have already learned that I gladly make different animals for them.]
